• In Honest Ed’s, we were both struck by the hand-painted signs that filled the shop.
• Jason remembered seeing a hand-painted timetable on the wall of an Indian train station, only to discover the next day that it had been replaced by a brand new digital display.
• I remembered my disappointment in the summer, when I discovered that the old analog sign in Venice’s Santa Lucia – which once filled the station with a resonant click-click-clacking – had also been superseded.
